~Roadside Pluck~

~Roadside Pluck~

For the past two days I have spotted this desk on the side of the road. It kept calling my name as I imagined where it would go if I got it. I actually thought it would be great in the backyard where I could sit and set up my cameras to take photos of the birds and since it was a roadside freebie it wouldn’t hurt so hard to think it was wood. So with the help of a friend, we went to pluck it off the side of the road and home it came.

The claw feet had me

My initial thoughts were to paint and waterproof it to last a bit longer outdoors, but, after taking a good look at it, it was too nice to leave outside and the sander became my best friend for the morning.

It wasn’t missing a thing except that I missed that little knob that you see right there…*see below*
The drawers were all in tact.

After a good sanding and with a couple of coats of quick dry lacquer on the top and some oil on the rest it turned out pretty good and made it inside to the library where it should naturally be.

After getting it in, it needed a bit of a touch up so while I was giving it another shot of oil I noticed a knob that somehow I didn’t see while sanding. What a beautiful surprise to discover writing pull-outs! One on each side pulls out and it looks as though they were never used. I just oiled them and they perked up.

This desk is really heavy and I may have to do a bit of tweaking here and there, but the size is perfect and I just didn’t have it in me to keep it outside with it having so much more to give. I think it will be happy here, I am happy it is here.

May all your plucks be as fun as this was.

Til next time…

  3. I love the variance in the patterning of the wood grain, how the drawers look different than the rest of the piece. It is great how you can see the natural character of the wood. You did not overtreat it and lose its natural features. This is a very beautiful desk.

    1. Yes, the drawers were in better condition than the top so they got a lighter sanding and oil. They all add the inserts so it was a great find 🙂

    1. I know! Some people come up here just to dump stuff, but most of the time it is gone in a day. They aren’t suppose to trash things at all here, but I am sure glad I got this one 🙂
