Where Stories Come From
A Journal Excerpt – July 28, 2026
“Every morning starts with the same little ritual: a hot cup of tea, my favorite place to sit and write, and my faithful little doggy, who is convinced the squirrels are plotting something. From my cozy corner I wait to see and feel the world rush by – and honestly, I think that is part of charm of journaling. I imagine it.
Somewhere, someone is searching for matching socks, someone is already on their second cup of coffee wondering why Mondays seem to arrive so soon every week. Some kid is probably trying to convince a parent that ice-cream counts as breakfast. A retired couple is deciding whether today’s adventure should involve gardening or a martini – or both. The world is full of ordinary stories, and I like to think they’re all unfolding while I sit here sipping my tea.
Meanwhile my little companion is hard at work. Every creak of the house deserves an inspection. A bird singing outside the window is clearly delivering important news, Lupe is gardening, and all that and more is highly suspicious to him. If there was an award for House Detective, my Benny might be in the running.
As my tea cools, my thoughts still wander. Sometimes they’re deep. Sometimes they’re ridiculous. More often, they’re somewhere in between swirling thoughts that invite my curiosity more than answers.
So I am here in a new journal – a place for cozy and wandering thoughts, a dog with strong opinions, and gentle reminders that I don’t have to witness the whole world to wonder about it. Sometimes all it takes is a copy of tea – or coffee – a lively imagination, and a four-legged friend to make an ordinary morning feel like the beginning of a wonderful day.”
This excerpt came from a morning when I had absolutely nothing in my head to write about. So I simply wrote about what was around me.
Sometimes your surroundings are all the inspiration you need. Just start–notice the little things and put them on the page. Before you know it, you have an entry. Then, Turn the page. Tomorrow will bring something new.
