~A DIY Privacy Fence~

Sometimes it is worthy to disguise an eyesore in the yard and garden. This project is all about that. In order to disguise the wall of stuff on the opposite side of the property, deal with weather, and deal with fire and winds, this is how this little spot turned out.

Using 3 expandable artificial ivy trellises bought online, they were attached to metal fencing posts with ties and just pushed into each barrel. It was as simple as that. The purpose of doing it this way with faux ivy is two-fold:

(1) They can be easily pulled up and out and put away in bad weather, or for any reason, and still have privacy in the meantime. Winds can be terrible here and taking them out will keep the barrels from blowing over and making more work for me. And…

(2) Replacing the original real life vines time after time was enough already and cleaning up dirt after these large barrels toppled over in the winds are over.

Using metal fencing posts I had on hand and ties, the trellises were secured then pushed into the barrels.

Under-planting flowers in the barrels and pots helped blend nature in a bit and helped keep the weight down low. It also made the faux ivy look a bit better.

Two were put side-by-side while another was pushed back a bit for walking and making the area more utilitarian for ease. This made a little entrance or exit for the area and yet still covered for privacy.

Needing a way to move the barrels around, wheels were attached on the bottom. They have locks on them and aren’t so bad to unlock and move for other occasional uses.

For the purpose of hiding out unsightly spots and/or separation of a large area, this works for the most part without jack-hammering another plant site.

I am still working on the generator hide out and I think that problem will be solved soon. That is forthcoming on another DIY post. This project would not work there because of the heat that the generator puts out when it is on. So….

  3. We have a nice view from our living room window of our neighbor’s radon pump. Perhaps this is a good solution to improve our view.

    1. I know it improved mine. I just couldn’t stand to be looking at a mess anymore that I could not clean up. So I hope you find a solution that works.

  6. An imaginative solution! Alas, here the ground ivy grows so quickly that I fear I could train some up a trellis in a season 🙁

      1. Ha, it would be nice if it were not so invasive 🙁 I think your idea of filling the pots with real flowers is a great way of giving it a more natural look! 🙂
